Sept. 8 - One-pager template sharing and mechanics

In this hands-on workshop, we'll open an InDesign template for one-page documents and take it for a spin, demonstrating use of stylesheets, grids and repeatable systems. Please bring a laptop with InDesign if you have one.

Oct. 20 - Dress it up with on-brand moves

Paper and printing techniques to elevate our invitations and celebrations –staying on brand when it’s time to get fancy.

Nov. 3 - University affiliate graphics

What to do when a project, initiative or unit does not qualify for an endorsed brand logo. What are the rules around these identity marks? What do successful marks look like? What are the moves to keep these graphics in alignment with the rest of the ASU identity system?

Dec. 8 - Feedback from friends

We'll show our recent work and get constructive feedback on how to make it better, more brand-aligned and more powerful with our audiences. Bring your work and great ideas for others. (We'll use the ASK model for critique–all feedback will be Actionable, Specific and Kind).

Jan. 12 - Typography–Tips and tricks with Akzidenz Grotesk

Our typeface is unlike the Times New Romans and Garamonds of the world, but is bold and strong while as it represents our brand’s voice visually. We will explore and share advice among peers on tips for using the powerful typeface that sets us apart in higher ed. We will look at inspirational references from history and contemporary design that use Akzidenz or its peers with big x-heights and round forms.

Feb. 9 - Infographics

How do we make them now? What do we need to make better quality, easily updatable, more sharable infographics?

March 9 - Presentation templates

How to make the most of this evolving toolset in your own projects and in collaboration in your department.

April 13 - Designing for experience

We'll look at examples from across the university for event material design and other multi-touchpoint communication streams. We'll discuss different ways designers are planning for the unfolding narratives of participants in the ASU experience. Please bring your deliverables and some of your planning docs to share best practices with others around planning.

May 11 - Feedback from friends

June 8 - Commencement: behind the scenes

Please bring your work related to this series of experiences we design for our students to cross such a critical threshold. Invitations, emails, certificates, thank you notes, photography, anything you made related to commencement is great for the group to review. Please print out single-sided so we can spread out and see the trends.

July 13 - Strategic planning for the year ahead

How do we get out in front of design projects before they become emergencies? How do we move from fighting fires to efficient and on-brand execution of on-time deliverables? Please bring your unit's annual calendar and a list of the projects you did last year. If you have a formal process for keeping track, great. If you can take a screenshot of your files folders, that's good too. We just need a place to start.

Aug. 10 - Photography testing

We'll review insights and requests for brand photography. How did we figure out what 'on-brand' photography is? What are its ingredients? How do we keep growing in this area?
