Service members and veterans who are trading their fatigues for textbooks on college campuses across Arizona bring with them a degree of maturity, experience with leadership, and familiarity with diversity that is unparalleled. Their life experiences enrich class discussions and campus life. However, for too many veterans, acquiring these assets came at a personal expense on the battlefield.
Numerous studies have shown that cognitive injuries are among the most prevalent of the battlefield injuries sustained by today’s returning service members. By some estimates, individuals who serve in Iraq and Afghanistan have as much as a 40 percent chance of acquiring such an injury by the time they have completed their service. Veterans entering the classroom with a known or unknown traumatic brain injury (TBI) need our support now more than ever.
With your help, the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona can be there to support our veterans with TBI during their college journeys. Your support will allow us to provide pop-up outreach and awareness events on college campuses, materials educating veterans and their families on coping with TBI, and resource facilitation support.
