Macayo’s Depot Cantina has its own unique location in Tempe that caters to the specific clientele that frequent the restaurant. Located close to ASU, Macayo’s Depot Cantina exudes a fun, party-like atmosphere and features many menu items that are exclusive to just the Tempe location.
Director of Marketing and Brand Management for Macayo’s, Ashley Negron explains, “They have stuffed, seafood jalapenos and those are very different. We have lobster tacos. And because we have so many unique menu items at this location, we try to maximize those few food items, like lobster mix, in several items. That lobster mix is really fresh and we use it in the seafood stuffed jalapenos, seafood ceviche and lobster tacos.”
Other unique menu items include the blackened seared ahi tacos and firecracker ahi tuna salad. Those are served with a tantalizing house made jalapeno ranch dressing. “That particular dressing comes courtesy of Jeff Rhodes, the director of restaurant operations who has also been the general manager at the Depot Cantina location for 15 years. Negron says, “A lot of this menu is his inspiration and is his creativity.”
“There are a lot of non-traditional Mexican items at this location because a lot of people are just visiting from elsewhere,” Negron states. “We have chicken sandwiches done in grilled, buffalo or barbecue style, and burgers. We have a Depot burger and then there is the bacon baja burger and a bacon border burger and that sort of puts a Southwestern spin on it. The bacon baja burger features our baja sauce on top and the bacon border burger uses spinach con queso. They are quite rich and wild in flavor!”
Negron continues, “Our barbecue sauce is a certified gluten-free sauce and our corn tortillas are gluten-free. The barbecue pork tacos are our top gluten-free menu item. The chipotle barbecue chicken salad is also really, really good.”
The Bomb is the bomb. “It is unique to this location,” Negron states. “This is the ‘kitchen sink,’ if you will. It is made with two flours tortillas. It comes on a large silver platter and is almost two feet long. It has every one of our beans-black, refried and ranchero beans, ground beef and rice and it is wrapped and topped with red enchilada sauce, baja sauce in the middle and then jalapenos.” The Bomb was so popular as a lunch menu, it has now made its debut on the Macayo’s Depot Cantina dinner menu!
