History of Tempe

Tempe: A Historical Perspective

Founded in the mid 1860s as one of two settlements along the Salt River, the city of Tempe, Arizona is a suburb of Phoenix with a rich history of its own. Originally known as Hayden's Ferry after ferry operator, Charles T. Hayden, the city has been known by its current name since 1879.

Once a dusty western outpost, Tempe is now a thriving city in its own right that is home to big business and multiple industries. Setting the stage for the city we know and love today was the Arizona Territorial Legislature's 1885 decision to place the Territorial Normal School within city limits. Known today as Arizona State University or ASU for short, the school formerly known as Territorial Normal has spurred development in the area from its inception to the present day.

No discussion of the city would be complete without examining the role of major industry in the area. The city was the home of America West Airlines from its inception through its takeover by US Airways up until its merger with American Airlines in December of 2013. The city is currently home to one Fortune 500 Company, Insight Enterprises and home to smaller companies such as LifeLock, Circle K, and Go Daddy. Additionally, the city was formerly home to the corporate headquarters of Cold Stone Creamery, and is still the home of its first retail location.

In addition to being a driver of the Valley of the Sun's economy and housing one of the premier public universities in the world, Tempe is also home to great restaurants, shopping and outdoor recreation opportunities. From hosting Super Bowl XXX at Sun Devil Stadium to hosting the BCS Fiesta Bowl through 2006, the city has a rich sports history. The 1999 creation of Tempe Town Lake and Beach Park which provides outdoor recreation opportunities and houses multiple festivals added another vibrant area to the city which already featured historic Mill Avenue and its legendary bars and eclectic shops.
